Job Title: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST (MLT/MLS)
REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager
JOB SUMMARY:
Perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease within a CLIA compliant Moderate Complexity Laboratory.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Implement laboratory procedures, efficiency and customer service.
- Ensure the system/method/process for lab results is accurate.
- May be asked to train and supervise laboratory personnel.
- Assist with maintaining laboratory inventory and ordering of laboratory supplies.
- Assure monthly spore count and autoclave cleaning is performed as indicated.
- Work cooperatively to compile and update the laboratory manual and keep it updated.
- Assist in developing and implementing quality control measures in the lab.
- Assist in enforcing all laboratory safety and infection control measures.
- Utilizes personal protective equipment appropriately for the type of activity performed.
- Set up (assist lab manager), adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
- Remain knowledgeable and up-to-date on all state, federal and CLIA regulations, and ensure they are followed.
- As appropriate ensure any federal and state reports are submitted timely.
- Assist with accurate coding and billing as needed.
- Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients.
- Identify and label specimens.
- Collect throat culture and nasopharyngeal specimens.
- Maintain electronic medical records including accurate and complete documentation of patient information and laboratory results.
- Clean and restock laboratory.
- Ensure that results from ordered tests are received and in the patients’ charts.
- Forward findings, if patient did not have ordered procedure done.
- Accommodate unexpected schedule changes and walk-ins.
- Ensure the daily, weekly and monthly controls are done.
- Maintain the general neatness and orderliness of lab.
- Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited college.
- Employee is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all certification requirements relative to the position.
EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Two years’ medical laboratory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of universal precautions and bloodborne pathogens.
- Knowledgeable of all state, federal and CLIA regulations regarding laboratory.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques used in the laboratory.
