 JOB TITLE:        ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSE  

PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH (PMHNP)

REPORTS TO:     MENTAL HEALTH SUPERVISOR

  1. JOB SUMMARY / OVERVIEW
  • Interrelates with providers, other health care organizations, the public and office staff. Performs comprehensive physical exam of patients.  Compiles patients’ medical data, including detailed health history and physical exam results.
  1. PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Makes decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate follow-up evaluation of a problem.
  • Reviews patient records to determine health status. Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes and assists in the continuity of care.
  • Orders diagnostic tests such as x-ray, electrocardiogram and laboratory tests, and interprets test results for deviation from normal.
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living and health maintenance.
  • Appropriately refers patients with significant illness beyond his/her scope to the physician.
  • Diagnose and treat common acute psychiatric problems, illness and crises
  • Psychopharmacologic management in collaboration with supervising physician.
  • Provide individual, group and family psychotherapy.
  • Care for and counsel patients with common identified chronic psychiatric conditions.
  • Coordinate and integrate multidisciplinary services for patients with complex psychiatric problems.
  • Monitor common health problems and refer specialized medical treatment as needed.
  • Provide comprehensive family psychiatric mental health education.
  • Work with patients and their families in anticipation of developmental milestones.
  • Perform or recommend age appropriate screening procedures.
  • Promote wellness-oriented self-care.
  • Diagnosis, evaluate and treat patients with substance use disorders

III.    EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Kansas license to practice as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
  • Board certified in Psychiatric Mental Health

  1. EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS
  • Prefer 1 – 3 years mental health experience
  • Must possess excellent language and mathematical skills.
  • Must be readily able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal successfully with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Checks accuracy of own work performance to insure absence of errors
  1. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires normal visual acuity and hearing.
  • Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
  • Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
